a little bit of a rant
ok i am going to rant a little bit about some hot topics, so if you are sensitive to this stuff or have completely opposing views than me, don't continue to read on. ;)
oh my gosh! i haven't written for awhile because between being in school, finding time for homework and keeping the family fed, clothed and in a clean house while running around after a toddler, my extra time is very limited. but today, i have had it. i don't really rant on this blog, because i don't necessarily think it's productive. ugh, but today i am going to for a little bit. i feel like this is the more appropriate place for this kind of a rant, rather than facebook or some other social media outlet that is so in your face. i have been on the receiving end of some posts on facebook that make me want to shut it down. you know, the friends you have that put up posts that are so rude, so dis-unifying and so polarizing that it's like a punch in the face when you scroll down your newsfeed. so, anyway, i will rant here because it's my blog and you have to purposely come here to read my entries. so, it's on you if you read this and don't like it. hahaha, just kidding, a little bit. anyway, i have been wanting to write about so many things over the past few months: the michael brown shooting and the rioting in ferguson; the horrific acts of ISIS, the dis-unifying political climate in this country; the school shootings and the midterm elections. i just feel so bogged down with all this crap! i don't even want to listen to npr or read the news. sometimes, i feel like we are being fed all this non-news to distract us from the issues that are really important. and it seems like people are eating it up, running around all pissed off and worked up over things that act as a veil. i don't know if it's because this is really happening or because of the fact that tv, radio and social media connect the world so intimately now, but it just feels like things are so messed up! the world is losing its damn mind! i just want to shake people and yell at them "get it together"!!!! so much selfishness, so much ego, so much injustice! i am so sick of the ugly, polarizing, nastiness of it all. so people have different opinions, different religions, different colors of skin----WHO CARES!!???why is it a problem? diversity is good! in every aspect of nature diversity is good, why can't it be good in society? why do people want so badly to judge and control and cause conflict over such trivial issues?!! it's mind boggling. now, don't get me wrong, there are plenty of issues that i think humanity should be working on, goals we should be working towards, and some problems i have no idea how to go about solving as a human family. but, that's why there are experts and people much smarter and more creative than me that can do this sort of thing. i swear to God, if i hear anyone else talk about how their religion is so much better than someone else's, or how someone is a terrorist because they are not a christian, or that there is only one way to believe i am going to lose it. i am tired of hearing people bicker like children and calling each other names because their beliefs don't align. if i hear one more time that "guns don't kill people, people kill people" i am going to lock myself in my closet. ahhhhh! see what i mean about ranting not being productive? so maybe if i make a list of what's bothering me, i will feel better:
-racism; yes, it is still around; yes, people experience it all the time, everyday; yes, there have been attempts at making things right, but not enough, not with heart, and not in a complete way
-sexism: see above
-the news: i feel like this is such a sham, particularly the large news outlets, the 24 hour news providers. they care about ratings, people, about money. they need to fill their air time with stories and because of that they will choose the things that will make people freak out, scared or mad and blow it up into such a spectacle. take a step back and look at it for what it is. it's for "entertainment". politics: so messed up, so polarized, i don't even know where to begin. pick an issue, sit in a room and figure it out, compromise, move on. stop wasting everyone's time and money. what a waste.
midterm elections: am so sad that because republicans have the senate majority that their self-proclaimed goals are to "take back the whitehouse" and "do whatever we can to de-fund and dismantel obamacare" and whatever other things they want to do to "get back" at democrats. stop it! both sides! just do your jobs, do what's best for the country, which means that you have to compromise because everyone has different ideas and opinions. stop acting like a toddler and trying to get your way, put your junk back in your pants and stop this pissing contest. i am soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo sick of this nastiness. both parties have their faults, it's not one or the other. they need to figure out how to work together and stop this political and bureaucratic gridlock.
-local initiatives on the ballot: the big ones were 594 and 591, 594 passed which pisses a lot of people off. i'm sorry, but if you have nothing to hide, and you are not a criminal or have some ill intent, then what's the problem with submitting to a background check if you buy a gun? you still have your right to bear arms, it's not being taken away unless you are a felon or some other type of person that maybe shouldn't own a weapon that can kill people so easily. you have to have a license to drive a car, or be a doctor, or teach children. you need a license to own a gun, at least right now, because CLEARLY there are problems. now, about the whole gun issue. this is a good example illustrating why it's good to remain friends with people that have opposing views than yourself, and actually step away from your own idea about something and REALLY LISTEN to what other people have to say about it. i have several friends and family members that have opposing opinions than i do about guns. in light of all the tragic school shootings and whatnot that has become more frequent, my knee jerk reaction was to think that there should be no more guns. shut it down, we obviously are not mature enough to handle it, take them away. but after ACTUALLY HEARING OUT WHAT THE OPPOSING SIDE HAS TO SAY ABOUT IT while CHECKING MY EGO i came to some sort of progress. i still don't know what the solution is, but i feel more clear in this process when i concluded that no, guns shouldn't be banned because that doesn't solve anything at this point, it would just create an underground gun trade similar to the drug trade and cause more problems, it doesn't change the fact that people that should not have guns could still get guns quite easily, yes, we have a problem with people using guns inappropriately and it has to do with the state of humanity right now, it's a spiritual problem, but even so, there needs to be some change. at least until humanity can live peacefully, or at least more peacefully than the present. maybe we should take chris rock's suggestion and make a bullet like $10,000. haha, that's a joke.
-religion: people have different beliefs and it's ok, in fact there was a country that was founded upon the principal of religious freedom. read other religions' holy books, their actual holy books and not someone else's cliff notes on them, and you will see that the spiritual fundamentals are in line with one another. people hold on so tightly to a literal interpretation or that their religion is "right". who cares?! if your neighbor is a different religion than you, and you believe that how they pray or who they worship or where they go to church is wrong, then let God deal with it. it's not your problem, it's between them and God, don't try to do God's job. let it go. now, obviously i don't feel the same about this issue when people claim religion as their motive to hurt/kill/oppress other people. that is not ok, and that is not what religion teaches, actually, if you READ the text of your religion. and let's not be so quick to judge, there are muslim extremists that unfortunately bring such a bad name to Islam just like there are christian extremists that bring a bad name to Christianity and have nothing to do with Christ's teachings. it happens and it's because these people are messed up. lest we forget the christian crusades and the thirty years' war---Christianity has its dark times, too. basically, any belief system that people ares so passionate about will have this. and it's not the fault of the religion, it's the fault of the individual, the infallible, imperfect, spiritually sick individual. now, my intention isn't to call out religions for the actions of individuals, but just to hopefully make people see that in every era, every belief system, any place in the world, people are the ones who get it wrong and pervert and manipulate the text and foundations of the faith with which they claim to believe. this won't change until humanity changes and we can unite under common beliefs and goals.
oh my. there are lots of other things that i would rant about, but i have kind of lost steam for now and i don't actually feel better after this rant, but at least i have gotten some words on paper (screen?). i hope that my words didn't offend anyone, and i have come to the conclusion that we can talk and talk and talk about our opinions on a particular issue, but it doesn't convince people in any way that believe the opposite, in fact, people use the opposing argument and twist it around to justify their own beliefs even deeper. so, my goal here isn't to "convince" anyone of anything, it's simply just an outlet for me to get some thoughts out and maybe i will even delete this post at some point. in order to truly change this world, i really feel that people AT THE GRASSROOTS, on the ground, mainstreet, whatever you want to call it, need to take the initiative, work together, compromise, consult. there is this thing in the Bahai Faith called consultation, which is an art form, really, wherein two or more people come together to talk about an issue. but what happens is that everybody prays together first for guidance, then the issue is presented, then each person offers their suggestions/solutions, and then, here's the tricky part---DETACHES themselves from THEIR OWN idea entirely and treats it as if it is an idea from anyone else in an effort to clear their mind, remove the veils and investigate the truth with no trace of ego or agenda. then they talk about the different ideas and eventually come to the truth. sometimes this happens quickly, sometimes it takes months, years, sometimes there is never a solution and it needs to be tabled for awhile. but it is the act of detaching from your own idea that will facilitate true cooperation and clarity. that is what needs to happen. that is what i want to be involved in. ok, that's probably enough for now. sorry if this post bothered you, but i gave you fair warning at the beginning! lemon out.
