baby stuffs that are good to have: 4-6 months
hey y'all. here is an update to the 'baby stuffs that are good to have' series i have been writing. for the first one, click here and for the second post click here. again, this is just my unprofessional opinion, just things that i thought were handy to have, and things that aren't obviously required like car seats and stuff. ok, so for the age range of 4-6 months, baby is becoming more active, kind of coming out of the newborn fog, they start to hold themselves up more during tummy time and then begin to kick their legs and raise them high while on their tummies, they start to roll from tummy to back and then back to tummy, they start to roll over and perhaps sit, assisted and then unassisted. they are getting much better with their hands, picking up toys and grabbing for anything, putting everything in their mouths, passing toys back from one hand to the other, shaking rattles like a pro. so clearly, having some new toys on hand is helpful, things like rattles, chewy key toys that you can pop in the fridge to help ease teething pain, books, toys that are good to chew on. my son really still loved his Sophie the Giraffe during this time period (and still does, he chews on that thing all the time) and an African woven rattle, he goes nuts for it.
-something to chew on like sophie and/or a teething ring or keys that you can put in the fridge:
-a toy that is musical like a rattle:
-food and food related paraphernalia:
-baby spoon: something that is soft on the gums is good
-small glass containers with lids: it's nice to have glass that way if you want to heat food up in the microwave, you are not using plastic, which can cause harmful chemicals to leak into baby's food, it's also nice to have a lid so that you can pop it back in the fridge if there is still food left, i bought these libby containers:
-something for baby to sit in: like a high chair. we have this one that can be strapped to a chair, is recline-able, and converts to a booster seat for toddlerhood. i really like it so far. i have also heard good things about the chairs that attach directly to a table, they can be used almost anywhere.
if you decide to make your own purees for baby, then you will need something to blend it up, like a blender, food processor, food mill, immersion blender, etc. if you want to you can purchase a special "baby" blender or steamer, i hear beaba is really cool. but if your goal is to use what you have, or to try not to purchase unnecessary items, then you can use your blender and/or food processor and it works just the same. if you make large batches of food and want to freeze it, i would highly recommend using something like an ice tray or specialized freezer trays with lids. i purchased these ones from fresh baby:
your baby may be cool enough to keep a bib on without making a huge mess, but mine isn't. if i put a bib on him, he tries to eat it thus smearing food all over his face, hair, hands and clothes, making a bigger mess than if i don't put a bib on him. so you may want to try a bib and see how baby does with it. something plastic-y with a pocket is good.
i think that for this age, the things that my son liked the best were toys that he could chew on and help him explore and develop. specifically, he liked his bouncy chair. he actually really enjoyed it! i bought it at a consignment shop, and it's a baby einstein bouncey activity chair, so he can chew on the toys and practice sitting and then bouncing. it was (and still is) really great to have, one of the things that he has fun in the most, especially since he never really liked any other kinds of chairs (bumbo, swing, carseat, vibrating chair, etc).
-toys to help develop motor skills: things like stacking toys and blocks: he absolutely loves the wooden stacking toy, he can't actually stack them yet, but he likes to bang them together and use the base as a mallet and chew toy
so, these are the things that were really great for us to have for 4-6 month age period, the items that mr z really enjoyed. it was all about playing, developing motor skills and learning to eat solids for us. what about you guys? what did your baby like during that age range?
