mama's got a brand new rug

oh man.  so, i have been looking for a new area rug for the family room for probably three years.  but it has been an all out man-hunt for the past year.  i posted about it a loooong time ago here. we have a kilim type persian-ish rug that was gifted to us and we put in the family room under the coffee table.
the kilim rug
at first, i wasn't sure if i liked the color and pattern, and i had a hard time trying to figure out how to decorate around it and be true to my (still evolving) decor style.  i had searched the internet for images of how other people decorated around a persian or kilim rug and i actually found some pretty cool ideas that were either modern, boho, eclectic, or a little more traditional, and i got excited.  i got some good inspiration.  i also felt like it was such a good thing to have this rug because the pattern and colors are such that it hides stains and spills SO WELL and with kids, that is the best!  so the family room evolved a little bit as i slowly started decorating and changing and adding and deleting, and i really fell hard for the kilim.  the only problem is its size.  it is waaaaaay too small for the space.  so i started looking for one of a similar color and pattern in a larger size.  hello five thousand dollars! if i wanted to buy a bigger one (a lot of the larger kilims i found were still maybe 5x7 or slightly larger) they were at least over $1000 and that is out of my price range at this time, for this purpose.  i mean, this rug will be spilled on, peed on, probably barfed on, it needs to not be a really nice, expensive rug at this point.  so i looked at other options, viewed some regular area rugs with similar colors and patterns, and i just couldn't find anything i was that crazy about.  but i wasn't in a hurry, so i just peruse the sales every now and then.  it's a little more challenging to fit the parameters that include style, color, pattern, size all within a certain budget.  and then after checking out some of the online black friday deals, i realized, the reason i wasn't finding anything was because although the reds, browns, oranges and other warmer colors of my kilim rug are beautiful on that rug, those are not really my style.  so if i were to pick out a whole new area rug, i normally lean towards lighter colors.  i like the light, airy, soothing blues, greens, grays.  and that is how the rest of the family room is outfitted.  and choosing a rug with a darker base, and even if the colors in the rug lean more towards the cooler side, it just wouldn't fit my decor style to have a darkish rug fill almost the entire living space of that room.  but then i thought that it is not smart to have a lighter rug because it will show more stains, etc.  finally i just got over it, decided i should just CHOOSE SOMETHING, it's not the last area rug we will ever own, and go with my gut.  i have been a fan of the overdyed look, and the worn, distressed look in area rugs, so after looking at one in person at homegoods, i narrowed it down between two.  i think it was at target, but then when i finally decided on the one i wanted they didn't have the 8x10 size.  so i checked rugs usa because they were having a huge sale and they have everything.  and there it was!  at an even better deal, 40% off and free shipping!  so i ordered that sucker, and a week later hubs was rolling it out across the family room floor.  and i heart it!  it's not a fancy, expensive persian rug, but for right now it fulfills all my area rug fantasies for the family room, haha  i love the colors, i am digging the distressed pattern look, and it just goes so well with the couch, ottoman and chairs, and wall paint, and everything.  it turned out to be a good match.  and the size is perfect.  wooooohooooooo!  now, it feels weird not looking at every website that sells area rugs on the daily!  here she is:

goes with the chairs

looks nice under the ottoman

contrasts well with the couch

babies love it
so hopefully it holds up well!  oh, and my beloved kilim rug has been moved to the master bedroom and this is now the place that i sit and say my daily prayers and meditation.  so it worked out well.
it's gonna look great in here after i work on the decor of this room
